After a thorough search for a detailed list of the world’s tallest air traffic control towers proved to be fruitless on the internet, I decided to try to create one of my own. Below is a working list of those air traffic control towers across the globe that exceed 100 feet in height along with the year the tower was completed, when known, provided in parenthesis.

Please note that some variation in height may occur as certain sources simply listed the height to the floor of the cab, while others list it to the top of the cab. Whenever possible, I used the top of the tower/cab. For those towers where I was certain the data was only to the floor, ten feet was added to represent the total height. Those with (est.) listed next to the height were calculated using FAA Airport Diagrams and NAV Canada Aerodrome Charts that provided the elevation of the control tower and then subtracted the nearest ground elevation.

While I was hoping that this list would be more comprehensive, not all statistical information on air traffic control towers is readily available or accessible on the internet. At the bottom of the primary list is a second one identifying airports with control towers that are likely 100 feet or more in height based on internet images, but the exact height has not been verified, despite a month plus long search.

Similar to office skyscrapers, the height of the tallest air traffic control towers has been rising over time. First, here is a brief summary of the tallest air traffic control tower for each continent, except Antarctica.

  • Africa – Cairo, Egypt at 361 feet
  • Asia – Jeddah, Saudi Arabia at 446 feet
  • Europe – Paris (De Gaulle – north), France at 367 feet
  • North America – Atlanta, Georgia, USA at 398 feet
  • Oceania – Melbourne and Perth, Australia tied at 262 feet
  • South America – Bogota, Columbia at 292 feet

Have personally seen the control towers in O’Hare, KC International, Indianapolis, Saint Louis Lambert, DFW, LAX, Kuwait, Baghdad, the “ATL”, Huntsville, Birmingham (AL), Dulles, and two smaller ones not listed here (I may have missed them), Columbus (GA) and Kabul International. A VERY interesting blog!

That’s cool that they can make air traffic control towers look so awesome! They are part of the beauty of the city rather than a sore sight. I don’t know how architects can come up with such different designs sometimes.

Is this the same Rick Brown as we went to GREC with in the 70’s in Frobisher Bay? If so, could you email me? People like Roddy Morgan are wondering how to get in touch. We have the Dreamliner in Iqaluit (CYFB) cold wx performance testing as I type… 🙂

London Gatwick isn’t in your list. Numerous websites say that when opened, in 1984, it was the tallest control tower in the UK, and possibly in Europe, but they don’t say how tall. Several flight simulator and Sketchup models seem to agree on 43 metres (141 feet) but I haven’t been able to confirm that from any official source.

A correction. Montreal Trudeau airport control tower is not 115 ft. It’s 169.9 ft (51.8 m) to the top of the tower.

Also Quebec city airport needs to be included in the list. Top of the control tower is at 136 ft.

San Juan tower (TJSJ). Estimate from aerodrome chart. Control tower listed as 250 ft minus aerodrome elevation of 9 ft, giving me 241 ft. Sounds and looks about right.

    Click to access TJSJ.pdf

Also, Palm Beach International (KPBI), i see you have listed it as 240 ft. I have a source here that says the height of the tower is 231 ft.
