Sharing our Thanksgiving traditions

I am really looking forward to Thanksgiving Day 2014 for several reasons. First and foremost, our families will be sharing and celebrating the holiday together for the first time. The second reason, which is also important, is we have invited two international students to join us for Thanksgiving.

One of the great blessings of living in a college town is the chance to meet so many people from all over the world and experience the diversity of their cultures. Well, this year we have invited an undergraduate student from India who is attending the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. student from Turkey who attends Michigan State University to join us for the day.

I cannot think of a better way to introduce international students to our country. Being so far from home must be difficult, so sharing family, fun, food, football, and friends can be a great way to ease the distance and loneliness. If you know anyone who may be alone on this (or any) Thanksgiving Day, whether they are visiting our country or a citizen, please consider including them in your holiday plans.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!
