Cities once or still buried by volcanoes

Below is a list of cities that were once or still are buried beneath the ash, rocks, lava, and other debris from a volcanic eruption. As usual, any additions or corrections are most welcome.

  • Armero, Colombia – destroyed in 1985 and since only partially rebuilt
  • Chinchina, Colombia – destroyed in 1985 and since rebuilt
  • Cataria, Italy – destroyed in 1669 and since rebuilt
  • Herculaneum, Italy – 79 AD
  • Minoan civilization, Greece – circa 1600 BC
  • Pompeii, Italy – 79 AD
  • Plymouth, Montserrat – 1997
  • Saint-Pierre, Martinique – destroyed in 1902 and since only partially rebuilt
