Below is a list of the largest cities in the world that incorporate a standard variation of the Greek term for a city-state “polis” as a suffix in their name*. Since some of these cities are suburbs of larger cities, the rankings are based on the core “polis” city population. A minimum population of 10,000 was necessary to be included on the list. Similar variations, including “pole,” “pol,” and “police” are included. Due to the dispute between Ukraine and Russia over Crimea, it is listed as a separate country for the time being.

*”Bul” in the name Istanbul is the Turkish variation of “polis.” If included on the list, Istanbul would be the largest “polis” city.

If you find the flags at the top of the post interesting, here’s a book that is available on Amazon* about city flags in the USA. A link is also provided for a book on American place names.
Perhaps Istanbul should be the largest city in this list. Its name comes from the Turkish pronunciation of a Greek phrase meaning “in the city” or “to the city”, as described in the Wikipage below. Thus, the -bul part of Istanbul derives from -polis.

Debated that for quite a while before publishing. I will add a footnote, but it was not my intent to relate every language’s version of polis.

Naples should be included in this list. Originally Neapolis, became Napoli in Italian.
