World’s most hyphenated (and commaed) city/town names

While hyphenated city/town names dot the globe, it is the francophone communities of France and French Canada who dominated this category, In fact, only these two (2) nations produced any hyphenated city/towns with more than three (3) hyphens their name. This was somewhat surprising as it was thought that Haiti might produce some examples, but the maximum there was three (3) hyphens. The same is true for Guadeloupe, Reunion, or Martinique.

In the United States, there are 17 places with three (3) hyphens, which are shown below.

_______

While conducting this research hyphenated city/town names, two (2) other communities in Canada must be mentioned, for they certainly have more commas than any other:

Dysart, Dudley, Harcourt, Guilford, Harburn, Bruton, Havelock, Eyre and Clyde (7 commas) — which thankfully is referred to as Dysart, et al. Probably the only city/town with et al in its name too.

Meanwhile; Lethbridge, Morley’s Siding, Brooklyn, Charleston, Jamestown, Portland, Winter Brook and Sweet Bay (6 commas) in Newfoundland & Labrador is simplified to Lethbridge to Sweet Bay, but without hyphens. It is also referred to as Lethbridge and Area.

_______

In the list below of longest multi-hyphenated city/town names, by far the most common word utilized is “Saint” or “Sainte.” In fact, more than 60 different saints are represented on the list. Any additions, corrections, or suggestions are appreciated. Enjoy!

  1. Dan Tilque says:

There are more than those 11 three-hyphen places in the US. I don’t have a list of them handy, but one I know off the top of my head is
    Howey-in-the-Hills FL

Another 3-hyphen US place. Unincorporated, but it has a Wikipage.

  3. Ingrid Hanna Ådnøy-Kristensen says:

There is a place name with four hyphens which isn’t in France or Quebec:

    New Chelsea-New Melbourne-Brownsdale-Sibley’s Cove-Lead Covehttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Chelsea-New_Melbourne-Brownsdale-Sibley%27s_Cove-Lead_Cove?wprov=sfla1

It’s a local service district of about 500 people in Newfoundland and Labrador. Not sure if it counts but thought it was interesting nonetheless!
