World’s largest h-y-p-h-e-n-a-t-e-d core cities

Port-au-Prince, Haiti – Source: landsat.visibleearth.nasa.gov/view.php?id=146787

As a companion to the previous post on cities/towns with the most hyphens in their name, this post lists the largest cities (core city not metro area) that have a hyphen in their name. The minimum population for inclusion in the list is 100,000. As can be seen by the list, there is a diverse group of nations represented–more than 30. Surprisingly, only one (1) city in the United States is included – Winston-Salem, NC and only two (2) from Canada.

Leading the way with the most cities represented are:

  • Russia = 15
  • South Korea = 10
  • Nigeria = 7
  • France = 5
  • Spain and Iran = 4 each
  • Romania and Haiti = 3 each
