World’s largest “stadt” suffix cities

 

Turning away from English-oriented place names for the time being, the list below identifies the largest cities in the world with the German suffix of “stadt.”  According to wiktionary.org, “Stadt” has the following meanings:

Stadt f (genitive Stadt, plural Städte, diminutive Städtchen n or Städtlein n)

city (large settlement)
town (settlement larger than a village)
(metonymically) city center (central business area of a city)
(metonymically) city, town, town council, city council (governing body of people elected to oversee management of a municipality)

By far the most common variation of “stadt” in this list is “neustadt” which essentially means “new city.” Of the “stadt” 38 cities listed that exceed 10,000 residents, ten (10) of them contain a variation of “neustadt” in their name. All of the examples listed come from Germany or Austria except one from Russia (Kronstadt).
