North America’s tallest monuments, memorials & statues

El Ángel de la Independencia – Mexico City, MX – Source: pinterest.com

Discovering that there does not seem to be an accurate database/list of prominent monuments and memorials on the internet, I decided to compile one. Most of the lists are of the Top 10 variety and actually leave out several that should be there. Here is the list of all those found that equal or exceed 70 feet in height in North America.

Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Monument – Indianapolis, IN – photo by author

Probably the most disappointing aspect of this list is how few monuments and memorials are erected to celebrate peaceful activities and achievements. Instead, the vast majority pertain to warfare or to those whom have fought wars. While such heroism and victories certainly deserve recognition, it would seem that towering monuments or memorials should also be erected to honor our valiant astronauts, pilots, diplomats, explorers, peacemakers, pioneers, and/or scientists.

Places the have the most such structures on the list include:

Greater New York City, NY/NJ = 8

Torreon, MX = 5

Boston, MA = 4

Mexico City, MX = 4

Washington, DC = 3

Chattanooga, TN/GA = 3

Gettysburg, PA = 3

Indianapolis, IN = 3

Please feel free to forward any additions, corrections, or suggestions. Peace!
